Early orthodontic intervention guides your child’s jaw and teeth development — preventing complex, costly treatment later.
Children’s jaws and faces are growing rapidly between the ages of 6 and 12. During this window, we have the ability to guide that growth — widening a narrow arch, creating space for adult teeth, correcting bite problems, and addressing habits that would otherwise cause lasting damage.
After this window closes, the same problems become significantly more complex and expensive to treat. Early intervention isn’t about braces at age 6 — it’s about using the most powerful growth period in your child’s life to set them up for a lifetime of good dental health.
What is early intervention?
Early orthodontic intervention — sometimes called Phase 1 treatment — is assessment and treatment that begins while a child still has some baby teeth. It typically starts between ages 6 and 10, and uses your child’s natural growth to do the heavy lifting.
Most parents assume orthodontic treatment means waiting until all the adult teeth are in and then getting braces. But by that stage, the jaw has largely finished growing — and the opportunity to guide it has passed.
What early intervention can do:
- Expand a narrow upper jaw to create room for adult teeth without extractions
- Guide jaw growth to correct underbites, overbites, and crossbites while bones are still pliable
- Break habits that damage development — thumb-sucking, tongue thrusting, mouth breathing
- Address muscle function issues that affect how the jaw and face develop
- Significantly reduce — and in many cases eliminate — the need for braces or complex treatment later
Look for these signs
Signs that your child may benefit from an early assessment
- Crowded or crooked teeth beginning to appear
- Upper and lower teeth that don't meet properly (crossbite, overbite, underbite)
- Thumb or finger sucking past age 4
- Tongue thrusting when swallowing
- Visibly narrow upper jaw or a high, arched palate
- Early or very late loss of baby teeth
- Jaw clicking, popping, or discomfort
- Mouth breathing at rest or during sleep
- Speech difficulties that may be related to jaw or tongue position
